EXPLORING E-WASTE IN INDIA

/ FULBRIGHT /

CONTEXT

Electronic waste -- discarded cell phones, laptops, and televisions -- is the world’s fastest growing stream of waste. It often ends up in developing countries where human health and environmental regulations are poorly enforced. As a Fulbright Scholar in India, I set out to bring awareness to this issue and thereby spark reflection on the environmental consequences of technological innovation.

COMPLEXITY

How to you begin to understand -- let alone document -- an underground economy that intentionally evades detection in a country where you very visibly stand out from the locals?

CREATIVE RESPONSE

Using my Hindi language skills, I built relationships with informal economy waste processors throughout India. I then secured European television station ARTE as a production partner for a full-length documentary that covered the work I did in India and was subsequently aired to an audience of millions throughout Europe.
